Donald, who triumphed at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in February before coming from five shots behind to win the season-ending Disney Classic on Sunday, totalled 60 points.
Simpson, also a double winner on the 2011 PGA Tour, earned 56 points while fellow American Nick Watney was third with 48 points.
Donald, who recorded an eye-catching 14 top-10 finishes in 19 PGA Tour starts this year, also won the coveted Vardon Trophy for the season's lowest adjusted scoring average.
The 33-year-old Englishman ran away with the award, his average score of 68.86 relegating Simpson (69.25) to second place with American world number four Steve Stricker (69.36) third.
Donald is widely regarded as the front-runner to scoop PGA Tour player of the year honours, which will be announced in early December.
Based on balloting of tour members, this award is perhaps the most cherished by the players as it reflects their standing among their peers.
Vying with Donald for this award are Americans Simpson, Keegan Bradley, Stricker and Nick Watney -- all of them double champions on the 2011 PGA Tour.
While PGA Championship winner Bradley is the only one among them to have landed one of the four majors this season, Donald has been the game's leading player and triumphed four times worldwide during 2011.

Beijing

BEIJING -The 2011 Beijing Marathon saw the emergence of a new generation and the comeback of a veteran on Sunday.
Chinese runner Wei Xiaojie finished the race in two hours, 28 minutes and five seconds to win the host country's 20th straight title in the women's event, ahead of Tesemma Yeshi Esayias from Ethiopia and Kenyan veteran Catherine Ndereba.
The 22-year-old, who was exhausted after crossing the finish line, attributed her victory to a strong mindset.
"I was running after my teammate and everything went quite smoothly, but I lost my strength gradually in the last part, and finished the race with just my will power," Wei said.

"Also, I think the key to my success was my peaceful mindset," she said. "My coach told me to forget the rankings instead, conquering myself was the most important thing."
Though the gold was Wei's first medal in an international marathon, she said she was not satisfied with the result.
"I expected to reach the Olympic standard by running within two hours and 27 minutes," said Wei, who hopes to qualify for the London Olympic Games by performing well at the 2012 Chongqing Marathon, a selection event for the Olympics.
Though only finishing third, Ndereba, a silver medalist at the Athens and Beijing Olympic Games, said she was grateful to reach the finish line in Beijing after recovering from a muscle tear.
"First of all, thanks for giving me the chance to run in Beijing," said the 39-year-old, who broke the women's marathon world record in 2001, running 2:18:47 in Chicago.
"I am very happy with the result, because I was injured the whole of last year, and I hadn't completed a marathon since 2009," she said. "I was just hoping to have a good race. I can say I'm really happy with my effort."
Returning to Beijing, where she reaped her second Olympic silver, Ndereba said running around the course reminded her of her glory days, and now she is working hard for a chance to make the London Olympics.
"I'm hoping to keep myself in good health and I hope my federation will consider me to run for my country."
On the men's side, three Kenyan runners bagged the medals with Kiprop Francis Kipkorir finishing first in two hours and nine minutes. Mugo Samuel Muturi, the winner of the 2009 Beijing Marathon, and Barus Benson Kipchumba, winner of the 2011 Prague Marathon, took second and third respectively.

NBA conflict

BUENOS AIRES - The Argentine basketball player Luis Scola on Monday said he is "very nervous" due to the ongoing lack of clarity surrounding a conflict in the US National Basketball Association (NBA) conflict which has caused him not to play.
Scola, 31, a power forward player of the NBA Houston Rockets, said he would not rule out the possibility of playing for an Argentine team until the lockout set by the NBA is resolved but agreed it would be unlikely as he would "run into an insurance problem."
"It is a complicated period. At first, it seemed almost fun, but now I am becoming very nervous and I want the conflict to be solved," he said about the conflict in the main basketball league in the world.
Scola also said he had not put any date as to when he will define what to do about his future and pointed out that he "likes to play in the NBA"  but that he cannot "be months without playing basketball."
"I need to be in shape and competing. I don't feel like going to the other side, make my family adapt to another country, adapt myself to other rules, another coach. I am not used to it," said the former partner of the Chinese player Yao Ming in the Houston Rockets.
